Holzwege - Ein Passionsspiel / Pathes to Nowhere - A Passion Play

Hospitalshof, Stuttgart April - May 2009

This show is based on the various functions Hospitalhof has played in the past and now: Today, Hospitalhof functions as a church but also as an educational center as well as an exhibition hall curated by its current priest Helmut A. Mueller. In the past the picture looks different: founded in the 16th century it was a play ground for nobels and knights, then served as monestary before it became a hospital and later a prison. During Nazi Germany it served the SS and quite some people were tortured there and deported to camps. Cynically this place then was also refered to as Buechsenschmiere (from can of smeary grease).

For this exhibition I fabricated 6 wooden half-reliefs which play with all the current and past functions of the Hospitalhof in relationship to my work: For the function of the Church, I used a famous quote Die Religion ist das Opium fuer das Volk Karl Marx and conducted some reading seminars on the Jewish Question by Karl Marx at the Hosopitalhof in Januayr 2010. For the Nazi time I took a picture from Wikipedia with cans (Buechsen) found in Auschwitz from the gas used to kill people. It should be remembered that this Zyclon B was founded by the institute of Fritz Haber who himself was Jewish, received a nobel price for Chemistry and developed mustard gas during WWI which he defended with the words 'death is death'. (See my work on him on dadalenin.com ) For the sports and toruture function I used my version of Duchamps ETANT DONNE piece which consist of quartering - a torture method that is as old, brutal and similar to the crossing of people - something central to the founding myth of Christianity. For the educational aspects I use a portrait from Adorno (also found on the web) who as a Jew was founding the Frankfurt School and become cruxial in the rebirth of intellectual life in Germany after WWII. My work on Alfred Jarry and his Perpetual Motion Food deals with drugs (hospital) and the limits of human capacities (sexual - Viagra - and sports dopping) - again ready to be cross-referenced with all the functions Hospitalhof once played. The work EVOLUTION is again a piece that can fit various of these funcitons - from religion (Darwin) to Sports (bicycling) and its drive to improve and develop. In the end all functions of the Hospitalhof (from Sports to Hosopital, prison, church and educational plattform deal with evolution, with the idea of improvement and education and free and forced change of human behavior.

Adjacent to these wood carving pieces you also find a series of referencial drawings ("Holzwege - Go Wikipedia" drawings). Holzwege is the book title by the second most important philosophical figure in Germany Martin Heidegger who collaborated with the Germans and refused to De-Nazification - a simple course needed to reclaim his university chair. (He prefered to not teach). The literal translation for Holzwege is 'wooden pathes' but the methaporical meaning in German is pathes that lead to nowhere. In the show you also find a portrait of Hannelore Marx who lived in Stuttgart before she was deported to various concentration camps. She survived and I was able to make a portrait of her which is entitled Languag of Emigration and part of a series of similar works (see my current show at Alex Zachary in New York). Perpetual Motion Food is Alfred Jarry's opiate and invented in 1903 in his novel: Supermale a couple of years before he died quasi at the age of Christ as a result of his excessive drug and absinth consumption in 1907.On view is also my film Ce qui roule a 45 minute short film as a fictiuos biography played by me on the life of Alfred Jarry that addresses nearly all aspect of this show in one or another way. Some of the result of our discussion of Karl Marx are presented as Reading Karl Marx and consist of a video and photographs. My bicycle quartereing work is also present as video and photograph and concludes the exhibition.

THE SHOW IS NOW ON: - SOME NOTES

but the abosurdity is

when I though that my objecdts secularize the church / CONTEXT

the church / CONTEXT seems to sacralize my art

for ex: adorno looks like pope pius III

also --- my bike quartering photograph (which is now in the collection of the priest who is talking about CROSSINGS) also really looks like it was intended as a crossing when it really was intented as just a quartering as a medioval method of torture / killing. needless to say: so were crossings. the visual parallel is overwhelming and underscored in this context. - in the actual church on the wooden piece, myEtant Donne version has me substituted by a woman / hence the protagonist Christ is now female.

even the sexually explicit things - the erected penis of the Alfred Jarry glass piece or the wooden etant donne stuff is looking more in harmony with (at least) catholic church iconography - so you might suddenly not see a penis but two hearts pointing in opposite direction linked by something - but the Gestalt and the colorizatoin is definitely something you can see in barrock iconography in churches. tits of course and standards in madona depictions.

since Hospitalhof was really during most of his history a very very repressive institution with repressive and unfortunate functions my work tries to mostly focus on this aspect. - an aspect that is also at the beginning of christianity.. .but 'forgotten', faded since the 'losers at the time' became quite powerful and in bed withe predominant powers. (historically speaking - this is not at all a critic of the current conditions. the priest Helmut Mueller is a wonderful person who s only vice seems to be FINE ART -- he definitely gave me 100 % full freedom to show whatever I wanted... and I tried to go to the very end with it. I wish the catholic church with its current abuse scandal would take lessons from the protestants and in partcular form such a great priest who is so so open and understanding.
