Roberta Smith mentioning in the New York Times

In their own words: ten Frieze New York artists tell us about their works for the Frame section The ART newspaper

Rainer Ganahl addresses  knowledge production and education in many ways. Without any hierarchy he moves through any medium and style, ranging from photography, film, painting and sculpture to social and political engagement and performance, theater and opera works.  Instilled with an unceasing neo-dadaist spirit, he scrambles normative
circumstances with subversive acts, or transforms subversive situations into
normative ones, always questioning society's fundamental expectations of us.
50 words – Artist Practice

Ganahl shows his “Seminars/Lectures” series started in 1995 last shown prominently in Robert Storr’s Venice Biennial show. Ganahl photographs talk and lecture situations with speakers, visuals and the audience. His S/L works are as sets of at least 2 photos (20x24”) but rarely exceeding 4 in an edition of 4. Each title lists the speaker, the presentation, the institution, the location, and the date of the event.  For Frieze, Ganahl presents female speakers that have made a difference for women in culture and the arts like Gloria Steinem, Angela Davis, Tony Morrison, Julia Kristeva, Judith Buttler, Louise Bourgeois, Linda Nochlin, Carolee Schneemann, and more.

Rainer Ganahl is a New York-based artist who has been shown internationally
including the Venice Biennial (1999, 2007, 2009) Shanghai, Athens, Sevilla and Kwangju Biennials. His solo gallery exhibitions include Kai Matsumiya, New York  (2017, 2016, 2015), Barbara Weiss, Berlin (2017), and Alex Zachary, New York 2010. Paul Pettro, Toronto, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2018). Earlier solo gallery shows include Massimo de Carlo, Milan, Blum and Poe, L. A., Philomene Magers, Cologne. His institutional solo shows included the Dallas Museum of Art, White Columns, NY, Wallach Gallery, New York, KUB, Bregenz, Museum of Modern Art, Vienna, and MAK Vienna.
Ganahl is an alumni of the Whitney Museum Independent Program and the art academy of Dusseldorf where he studied in the class of Nam June Paik.
